The Book of James is integral to understanding the Christian Life! James examines the question: What kind of LIFE does FAITH lead us to? Many today want to claim faith in Christ, without obedience to God. That kind of faith, well, it’s about as useless as a screen door on a submarine.
Consider this thought from Barnes Note Commentary...
Interesting how changing just a few words makes this quote applicable to us...
(We live) in a corrupt age, and among corrupt people; among those who (seek) to be justified before God by the mere fact that they (are Christians), that they (have) the true religion, and that they (are) the (saved) people of God, and who in consequence, (are) lax in their morals, and comparatively regardless of the obligations to personal holiness.”
As we ponder at that statement above, consider when one finger is pointing out at others, three point back at you. Following God’s will is a humbling challenge we should strive for each and every day. James’ conclusion was that personal holiness (Not Perfection but obedience) is necessary to salvation! However, many people are quick to point out that Paul asserted man cannot be justified by works, but by faith in Christ.
It’s important to note, Paul & James don’t contradict, they are simply concerned & prioritize (through inspiration of the Holy Spirit) different errors that were made then...and are still made today. Paul emphasized the importance of faith apart from the law & James corrects the impending popular notion that faith alone saves. With both writers, it’s important to remember that while they wrote these letters, it’s God speaking to us, not man.
God reveals to us, through James, the very important point, obedience to the will of God shows genuine faith.
