In 1897, a small group of Christians assembled together on 11th Avenue South in Nashville in a modest frame building. The group was composed of families who formerly attended College Street Church of Christ, now known as Lindsley Avenue Church of Christ, where David Lipscomb served as an elder. As the city expanded, a number of families who attended College Street Church of Christ had built new homes in the Waverly neighborhood of Nashville. They found that it was too far to return to College Street for their worship service. The founding and early days were a struggle for this little group. Visiting preachers included F.D Srygley, T.Q. Martin, and David Lipscomb. A major decision was made in 1910. The original modest frame building was sold and a new brick structure was built at 1906 Lawrence Avenue. The original location was too small and was on a dead end street, which the congregation found undesirable for future growth. The decision to move to Lawrence Avenue proved to be sound. Membership and attendance began to improve from the start. A large revival was held in the new building. David Lipscomb, who was so old and feeble that he had to preach while seated in a chair, held the rapt attention of the audience with his wisdom. The church has continued to grow over the years, relocating to our present location in the 1960s.
